What are the various types of yoga?
Yogasanas have been evolving and adapting different styles t suit different needs, over many centuries. Listed below are the more popular forms of this philosophy.
Hatha Yoga: It is a great form of yoga for beginners and involves various types of breathing exercises and body postures. These exercises are gentle on the body and allow the practitioners to follow the regimen at their own pace.
Bikram Yoga: This is one amongst the various types of yoga that promotes asanas to be performed in a heated room. This form of yoga improves blood circulation and also increases lung capacity. Increased temperature also increases sweating that open the pores of the skin and expels toxins, thereby increasing the life of skin. Heat also purified internal organs by forcing them to expel toxin in the form of water.
Karma yoga and Jnana yoga: This is a type of yoga that is practiced only by advanced yogis. This involves exercises to the mind and spiritual awareness and not related to the physical aspect of asanas. The practitioners are called karma yogis and there are very few practitioners of karma yoga in the world today. This ideals with the spiritual aspect of yoga and its practice was very prevalent in the ancient times.
Vinyasa Yoga: This type of yoga involves exercises that include many postures and breathing techniques. The transition between postures is done smoothly, in a free flowing manner. Practitioners experience increased awareness of the effects of asanas as the complexity levels increase. This is also called as corepower yoga.
Ashtanga yoga or Raja yoga: This is an advanced form of yoga that specializes in exercising various parts of the body through postures and vigorous transitions. This form of yoga is physically demanding and is not recommended for beginners.
Kundalini yoga: This type of yoga involves exercises for the mind and physique and help in awakening the inner life force or energy that is presumed to be located at the base of the spine. There are various kundalinis (chakras or life forces) that can be initiated by the means of specific postures and movements. This type of yoga is very popular in India but not so prevalent elsewhere.
Iyengar yoga: This is a types of yoga for beginners that promote usage of props like blocks, belts, cushions etc, while performing asanas. This is an adaptation of the more traditional type of ashtanga yoga but more athletic and vigorous. This is a very popular type of yoga and continues to be practiced by many celebrities.
